One afternoon on Na Příkopě in Prague answers the October packing question better than any list could. Big blanket scarves in brown check, dusty pink and sea green. Short puffer jackets, black or a pale icy blue. Light-wash jeans, white jeans, and low sneakers on almost every foot. It works because each piece has a job. The scarf holds the heat at your neck, the jacket comes off by lunch, and the shoes are made for walking all day.

Three people, three coats, and between them exactly two colours that aren’t grey, navy or black. One red ribbed knit on the left, one checkerboard scarf in the middle, and a pair of light-wash jeans on the right. That’s the whole colour budget, and it’s why the group photographs as a set rather than three separate outfits. The shared move is coat length. All three sit at mid-thigh, open, worn loose over something slim.

Everything in this look is one colour and one metal. Cobalt shows up in the tank, the eyeshadow, the beaded bracelet and the mirror coating on the lenses. Silver does the rest: the stacked rings, the pearl-grey beads, the chrome manicure, the thin metal frames pushed up into the hair. It reads as loud from across the street, and it’s actually a very small shopping list. The reason it holds together is repetition, not matching.

A knit polo dress in navy and white stripes, a wide straw hat, and bare feet in the sand. That is the entire outfit, and it is doing more work than most holiday wardrobes. It covers the shoulders, it reads as a dress rather than a cover-up, and it will walk off the beach straight into a café without anyone thinking she got changed. The red band across the chest is the only loud thing in it, and it earns its place by breaking up a lot of horizontal navy.

Two versions of the same idea, walking side by side. A pastel sports bra, high-waist leggings that hit the ankle, chunky white sneakers, and almost nothing else. One keeps the leggings dark navy so the pale blue bra does all the talking. The other goes full tonal, powder blue leggings under a pink and white bra, which is the harder trick and the better one. Both look put together in a way that a plain black gym set never does, and neither of them is wearing anything complicated.

Everything in this outfit is deliberately boring except two things, and that is the whole trick. Light-wash high-waisted skinny jeans, a slouchy olive tee tucked loosely at the front, and then red. Red strappy stiletto sandals with an ankle tie, and a small structured red bag with gold hardware on a long red strap. Two red objects at opposite ends of the body, nothing else competing. It reads expensive and it costs almost nothing to reproduce, because the expensive-looking part is the colour discipline, not the labels.

A plain black crew neck tee. High waisted light wash jeans, ripped across both knees, cuffed once at the ankle. A small black crossbody on a thin strap. A watch and a few bracelets on one wrist. That is the entire outfit, and in a square holding a couple of hundred people at dusk she is the most pulled together person in the frame. Nobody around her is wearing anything more expensive than she is.

Nobody in this photo is dressed up. Sweatshirt, jeans, a cardigan, a white shirt, sneakers. It is a weekday walk across cobbles in central Madrid and everyone is wearing what they grabbed. And yet the whole frame looks composed, which is the thing people mean when they say Europeans are effortlessly cool. The effort is real, it just went in months earlier, at the point of buying. Once you own the right things, casual takes about four seconds.

This is what binoculars actually get used for. A terrace, a planter full of geraniums, palm fronds in the middle distance, and a mid-size roof-prism pair held up one-handed for maybe forty seconds at a time. No hide, no dawn start, no tripod. She’s got sunglasses on under the visor, which tells you everything about the light and about the eye relief she needs. It’s a good setup, and it is nothing like the setup every binocular review on the internet is written for.

This is one of those outfits that looks thrown together and absolutely isn’t. Cream shearling, deep teal roll neck, cropped straight-leg jeans, flat black boots, oversized sunglasses. Four neutrals and one good colour. She could wear it to lunch, to work, or to nothing in particular on a Tuesday afternoon, which is exactly the point. What makes it work is the proportion. The coat is long, soft and slightly oversized, so everything underneath has to be lean.
